My daughter will never let me live down my verbal flub on the day of my dad’s funeral. I had been trying to explain that my father’s death had come on the heels of the deaths of two of his sisters, when I said, “He was the last of my sisters to die.” My daughter caught the mistake immediately. “Dad,” she said, “that would make you a woman!” As a writer, I appreciate a good turn of phrase, but this was not what I intended. The truth is I misspoke. My father was the last of his siblings to die. I was right about that, at least.
